i hate when ppl r otherkin elitists like they have control over how someone labels their experiences

Hahah, it is entirely absurd to equate proper terminology usage to elitism. Want to know why?

Otherkin have been around since the 1970s.  The definition has always meant to identify AS a nonhuman being.  This is not suddenly having greater “requirements” to belong in the community.  This is simply upholding the definitions of terminology older than you are.

This is also not elitism because there is no value statement being made.  Sorry, if your “kintypes” were consciously chosen or are things you relate strongly to, you are not otherkin by definition.  That doesn’t mean your experiences are less real or less meaningful.  It just means you’re using the damn words wrong! This would mean being other-hearted, because that’s what that word means.

You know what’s really egotistical?  Twisting the meanings of a word to suit yourself, regardless of the degradation of its meaning and the integrity of the community it represents.

If you called yourself trans because you had mostly friends of another gender (and related a lot to them), people would be well within their rights to tell you “No, that’s not what that means, regardless of what label YOU want to use.”  Same deal here.  Words have definitions and if you are labeling your experience with a term whose definition does not match those experiences, you are wrong

So no, others don’t have control over how you label your experiences.  But words have objective meaning, so you shouldn’t be surprised when you get corrected, and you definitely shouldn’t be surprised when you get laughed at for equating “being told your word usage is wrong” to elitism!  It’s funny, and it makes you look like a whiner who can’t stand criticism and doesn’t have the sense to accept being wrong gracefully. I feel second-hand embarrassment when people try to make their errors about other people.  It’s really cool when people admit and correct their own mistakes, but here on tumblr, if you get told you’re using labels incorrectly, it’s usually  “waaah, stop policing me, you elitist gatekeeper, you!”

Being other-hearted is no more or less cool than being anything else, folks.  And you do yourself a lot more favors by being honest with yourself and being accurate in your term usage than you do by grabbing whatever word seems coolest and clinging to it regardless of factual reality.

and how do you know exactly that the person is in fact other-hearted? are you a mind reader?  can you TELL exactly how the person connects to their kintypes?? holy shit

u cant tell someone they arent trans enough so dont even think of comparing it with that bc it’s the same - you don’t know how they feel. the situation you described just then is exactly how i learned that what i was feeling was valid and im trans..

that autism feel when you want to do something that would be good for you but that your allistic family would see as weird or ridiculous (like buying chewy stim toys so you don’t eat when you’re not hungry just because you want to chew on something) and you feel like you can’t take care of yourself because you can’t deal with being ridiculed.

Okay, but imagine if Tumblr mobile let you know when you got a fucking message instead of being a piece of shit and making me look like an asshole for blogging and not responding as if I’m ignoring everyone when really I’m just on my phone.

People don’t understand false equivalencies. At all. Saying things like “if I said I hate trans people there would be an uproar but it’s okay for you to say you hate cis people??” is beyond idiotic. That’s like saying “it’s okay for this 2 year old to hit me but I ,a grown adult can’t punch him back????”
